Fun with Pegboards

6 Jun

Since we moved into our new house not a weekend’s gone by without a trip or two (. . . or three!) to a home improvement store. At first it seemed like each night we spent unpacking was just another chance to lengthen Ye Ole To-Do List but after completing this project we’ve really been enjoying the fruits of our labor. Our previous apartment was tiny and made of cinder blocks so bike storage was tricky. We kept tools on she shelves of a built-in unit, spare parts under the bed, and since we couldn’t drill into the walls, Nick built two bike racks to hold all our rides. They press against the ceiling and floor to hold in place and avoid any wall blemishes, like so: Since the ceiling here is vaulted (awesome!) we needed a new approach. A pegboard seemed like the best option for us: simple to keep organized, easy access, less furniture/shelves to buy. But of course we couldn’t stand the thought of hanging a white square with holes in it on the already white walls, so we did the cool thing and spray painted it! Cut your pegboard down to the size you need, tape off your design, and spray away! We bought a 8×12 pegboard and cut it down in 3 pieces to fit 3 different projects. After a couple coats of paint and a few beers, voila! Although most of the pegboard is covered in tools and bike gear, it’s nice to have some fun color involved. After we hung the board, we took the hooks off the old bike rack and simply drilled them into the wall. I don’t think I could be happier with how our little “dining nook” turned out. Having everything out and in one place is so convenient. And mounting the bikes upwards really takes advantage of all the wall space created by the super high ceilings. It also prevents scuffs on the walls from just leaning all our bikes in a pile. It also prevents the bike pile in the first place! It’s so wonderful to watch each space come together and see how it transforms a rental house into an actual home that’s perfect for us. If you can’t be out riding, where’s your favorite place to park your bike?

Ah, I’m so jealous of your bike rack! My house is sooo small & there’s barely anywhere to fit my bike – and I refuse to keep it outside (I mean, I *do* live in East Nashville haha). I would love something like you have. The fact that your pegboard matches you bikes is the best part :D

haha i wasn’t going to draw attention to the fact we matched it to our bikes but it is *pretty* fabulous! and yeah— your bike is too cute to leave outside for the snatchers!

I love how your pegboard turned out! I have one in the garage that’s been waiting to be painted for my craft room, I really like the design you did!

you should totally paint it! i really wanted to do a chevron pattern but my partner convinced me to try this— so glad we went with his idea instead! andddd i LOVE your 2nd hand pledge— i try to buy almost all my clothes used/handmade and i’m working on branching that out to pretty much everything else in life (besides food)!

Love the wall mounting for the bikes! And is that a pie on the table? Oh, yum.

    • Kitty Cat Stevens June 17, 2012 at 9:33 pm #

it’s a ceramic pie holder my mom just gave me! i can’t wait to use it— as cute as it is, it’s still disappointing that it’s not a *real* pie =]

Wow that came out really wonderfully! I especially love how you decorated the the board to hold your tools, what a clever idea.

at first i wasn’t sure if i would like all the tools being displayed so prominently but now that it’s up and in working order it’s SO convenient (and pretty cute— if i do say so myself!).

We’re in desperate need of bike storage in our apartment! There are three just lying around. You’ve definitely inspired me to hang them on one wall!

Love the bike racks! How do you keep your bikes clean enough to go in the house every night? It would drive me mad if there was the least bit of dirt on them! :)

The pegboard idea is great too – we can get the board here in our local DIY superstore, but I’m not sure where to find the various hooks and loops to fit into the holes. Did you buy them online? Can you share the link?

Our apartment is pretty small too and there’s no chance we’d be able to keep our bikes there at all. In the end they went to our storage Basildon unit, half a mile from our block, and we drop by there whenever we need to pick them up. We do have a communal basement, but it’s full of useless junk from the other residents… really frustrating!

thanks, i’m glad you like it! i have a road bike and tennessee is so hot and dry that there is not much on the roads to get our bikes super dirty! we bought the hooks at a hardware store here, but you can find the same ones online here. having everything on the walls has really helped us out so if you have the space then i highly recommend it!
